Seagram Heir's Manhattan Penthouse In Contract For A Record $70 Million

$

The Fifth Avenue penthouse of late Seagram billionaire Edgar Bronfman Sr. was on the market for 27 days before a mystery buyer swooped with a $70 million bid this week, according to the New York Post.

That's $5 million more than the original list price, and $5 million more than another well-to-do-buyer was already offering.

The property is currently under contract with Brown Harris Stevens and if the sale is completed, it will be the most expensive co-op ever purchased in New York City, edging out the current record: the $54 million Fifth Avenue penthouse bought by music mogul David Geffen in 2012.

Bronfman, who sold his family's spirits empire for $34 billion in 2000, had lived in the prewar building for the past 40 years until he passed away in December. The full-floor residence has a major selling point in its wrap-around terrace, but the layout of its five bedrooms, eight and a half baths and library seem outdated.

One real estate source told the New York Post the new owner will likely gut the place. Take a look at the photos of the most expensive co-op as it currently stands.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: Richard Gere Drops The Price On His Hamptons Mansion To $56 Million

Richard Gere Hamptons Mansion $65 million

Richard Gere has dropped the price of his North Haven mansion in the Hamptons to $56 million, Hamptons.com reports.

Gere first listed the 6.3-acre estate last summer in July for an outrageous $65 million. At the time, we wondered if the 12-bedroom home was actually worth the stunning price-tag.

The property, known as Strongheart Manor, was built in 1902 and comes with two guest houses, an outdoor fireplace pavilion, and a dock that looks out onto the water.

It's been renovated and expanded to include twelve bedrooms and over 12,000 square feet of space. The home is currently listed through Sotheby's International Realty, which recently added even more high-quality pictures of the mansion to beef up the listing.

The price cut could help Strongheart Manor sell — especially with the new Hamptons season on the horizon — but considering Gere bought the entire property originally for $11.3 million (not including the cost of his subsequent renovation), $56 million still seems awfully steep.

Welcome to Richard Gere's $56 million Strongheart Manor.

Tech entrepreneur David Spafford and wife Susan are selling their gorgeous, 24,127-square-foot home outside of Salt Lake City, according to the Wall Street Journal

Spafford co-founded Megahertz Corporation in his basement in 1985, when he was a student at the University of Utah. Megahertz grew to become the leading manufacturer of laptop computer modems, and the company sold to U.S. Robotics in 1995. Nearly 20 years later, Spafford's estate is a huge step up from his company's humble basement beginnings.

The home has five bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, plus an arcade, home theater, indoor jacuzzi, and tennis court. It also happens to have some beautiful decor.

It's listed with Coldwell Banker for $14.9 million, and it's certainly a sight to see.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: California's Legendary Hearst Mansion Can Be Yours For $135 Million

Godfather Beverly House

The mansion where a scene from "The Godfather" was filmed is having a rough time on the real-estate market.

According to real estate blog Curbed, the famous Beverly House in Los Angeles first went on sale back in 2007 for a whopping $165 million. That price was dropped to $95 million in 2010, and was relisted as a rental in February 2013 for a jaw-dropping $600,000 per month, making it the most expensive rental in the U.S. at the time.

Now the New York Daily News is reporting that the extravagant mansion is once again up for grabs, this time for $135 million.

So what makes the high-end home so special? Besides the fact that it's absolutely gorgeous, with 50,000 square feet of living space, 28 bedrooms, 3.7 acres of original landscaping, and an Art Deco nightclub (seriously), the property listing on Hilton & Highland says the house was designed by famed architect Gordon Kaufmann, whose best-known work was the Hoover Dam.

Beverly House was originally built in 1926 for banking executive Milton Getz. Then in 1946, actress Marion Davies bought it for William Randolph Hearst, who lived out the rest of his life here.

Other famous guests have included John F. Kennedy and Jackie O., who stayed at the house on their honeymoon, and the fictional producer Jack Woltz in "The Godfather," who woke up to find the severed head of his horse in his bed — an offer he couldn't refuse. It's currently owned by attorney and investor Leonard M. Ross.

Cooper beach mansion $190 million

CTNews.com reports that the Copper Beech mansion in Connecticut, which was once the most expensive home for sale in the U.S., has officially sold for $120 million.

The home was first listed for $190 million back in May of 2013, but the 12-bedroom mansion failed to attract a buyer. The price was chopped to $130 million in September, and after another $10 million discount, the gorgeous Connecticut property is now in contract, though there's no word yet on the buyer.

The 50-acre estate dates back to the 1890s, and was owned by timber magnate John Rudey. The property carried a reported $120 million in debt, likely accounting for the sky-high initial sale price.

The 12-bedroom home has 15,000 square feet of living space, 7,000 square feet of basement and attic space, and an 1,800-foot-long driveway. There's also a grass tennis court, innumerable gardens, apple orchard, greenhouses, 75-foot-long heated pool, and a carriage house.

The estate was listed with Christie's International Real Estate and David Ogilvy & Associates.
