Step Inside The $17 Million Brooklyn Home That Was Built By A Mobster And Is Owned By A Russian Heiress

brooklyn house of the day $17 million

The most expensive home in Brooklyn at $30 million has suffered a steep discount to $17 million, according to Curbed New York.

Though it has significantly dropped in price from last year, the Mill Basin mansion keeps its title as Brooklyn’s most expensive property. The chop seems to stem from the fact that the original listing included a guest house on the property while the current listing does not.

The gated four-story compound includes five bedrooms, 9 and a half bathrooms, and over 14,700 square feet of space.

Outside, the mansion has a 1,000-square-foot pool, a 40-person pavilion for parties, and 30,000 square feet of outdoor gardens.

There’s also a downstairs wine cellar, 257-feet of waterside frontage, a four-car garage, and a two-boat marina. It's a pretty nice spread that looks like it could belong in Miami instead of deep Brooklyn.

The mansion was originally built and owned by John Rosatti, a multi-millionaire with mob connections to the Colombo crime family. Known as an “earner,” he generated millions for their illegal activities with his car dealerships, according to the Village Voice.

He then sold the property to Russian heiress Galina Anisimova (mother of the "Russian Paris Hilton") for $3 million in the late ‘90s after he got caught up in some legal drama for building his home on wetlands.

Anisimova remains the current owner, according to public records found by The Real Deal.

James Cornell and Leslie Marshall of Corcoran Real Estate Group are currently sharing the listing.

Welcome to 2458 National Drive, Brooklyn's most expensive property.

The home is perched right on the Mill Basin waterfront.

For those who don't know where that is, it's in deep Brooklyn — far, far away from Manhattan.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: The Largest Private House In The UK Is On The Market For $11.1 Million

Wentworth_Woodhouse_01

The largest private house in the United Kingdom with over 250,000 square feet and 365 rooms has gone on sale for a surprisingly paltry $11.1 million, according to The Daily Mail.

In its prime, the Wentworth Woodhouse estate was the height of aristocratic English society. It sat on the richest seams of coal in South Yorkshire just as the Industrial Revolution was taking off — and seemed to be the center of infinite wealth.

Built by First Marquess of Rockingham, the home took so long to build that the eastern and western wings of the home were built in different architectural styles (the east side is early-18th century Baroque while the west is mid-18th century Palladian).

It is so staggeringly massive that guests to the Wentworth Woodhouse were actually given baskets of confetti to scatter as a trail so that they wouldn't get lost on their way back to their rooms at the end of the evening, according to The Daily Mail

Click here to tour the home >

The palatial Wentworth Woodhouse is steeped in history, too. The Fitzwilliam family, who inherited the estate after the 2nd Marquess died, were thought to be the inspiration behind Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” They were the 6th wealthiest landowners in the country at the time and the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam is thought to be the real-life counterpart to Austen's dreamy Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The Fitzwilliams threw Gatsby-esque parties, and guests would sometimes meet on the train back to London to discover that they had both been in the same house party all weekend, according to the Daily Mail.

But after World War II, the property was ripped to shreds by the government. There was a national shortage of coal, and the Minister Of Fuel and Power ordered the grounds of the house to be dug up for opencast mining.

The house was headed for a ruin, and when the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam died in a plane crash on a scandalous rendezvous with JFK’s sister Kathleen ‘Kick’ Kennedy in 1948, the home was turned over and became a college of physical education.

In 1999, the Newbold family bought the estate and have spent years trying to restore the home to its original glory. The family is now selling the estate for a reported £7 million or $11.1 million, although it still needs an estimated $42 million in repairs.

Welcome to the esteemed Wentworth Woodhouse. It is twice the size of the Buckingham Palace and once employed a staff of over 1,000.

The Wentworth Woodhouse is being sold with nearly 90 acres of parkland, several resident statues, and a chandelier that is too big to be removed.

The open-cast mining by the government came right up to the edge of the main lawn on this side of the house. The Newbold family spent 15 years trying to remain damages.

chalet le petit palais house 9

The world’s billionaires are flocking to the French Alps this ski season, where deluxe “super chalets” are renting for over $40,000 a day.

These vacation homes rent for such extraordinary prices because they offer luxurious amenities such as personal chefs, butlers, nightclubs, and more.

Of course, the mega-wealthy clientele love it.

One such home is Le Petit Palais chalet in the Three Valleys area of the Alps — a stunning, modern chalet that was only just completed back in 2012. The owner, Dennis Crema, told the Wall Street Journal he values the chalet at over $60 million.

But instead of selling the home, Crema rents it out on a week-by-week basis for anywhere from €100,000 ($125,000) to €240,000 ($300,000) at the height of ski season. That averages to over $40,000 a day, and the reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.

The six-floor, ski-in/ski-out home has its own chef, pool, wine cellar, cigar room, nightclub spectacular views, and over 18,000 square feet of space.

There are seven bedrooms and it can fit between 12 to 15 guests. If that’s not enough, Le Petit Palais also connects to its sister villa, Le Petit Château, via a large underground parking area.

Le Petit Palais is a part of the Courchevel 1850 ski resort and is closest to the Bellecôte slope, perhaps the most popular slope due to its connection to a nearby village with lots of shopping and restaurants.

You can see prices for Le Petit Palais and other super chalets at Alpinel.com.

Welcome to Le Petit Palais chalet at the French Alps ski resort Courchevel 1850.

Virgin Islands Villa Whydah

Financier Tom Hudson, founder of investment firm Pirate Capital, is auctioning off his pirate-themed villa on the island of St. Thomas.

Previously on sale for $35 million back in 2012, the island couldn’t find a buyer so it will now be auctioned off to the highest bidder, starting at the low, low price of $6 million.

"The owner has selected the luxury auction process because he is ready to start another real estate project, and wants to first know this property is off his books,” Platinum Luxury Auctions President Trayor Lesnock told Business Insider. “The date-certainty provided by the auction was very attractive to him in this regard, as opposed to continuing the traditional listing process, which can be quite lengthy for higher-priced island properties.”

Known as Villa Whydah, it's been described by Hudson as "the retirement home of a pirate who surrounds himself with the bounty of his exploits with his wife at his side."

Named after a pirate ship that sank in 1717, Whydah sits on the western tip of St. Thomas with views of Botany Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. Not only does the 19,000-square-foot home have helipad access, two guest homes, and a caretaker house, but it's fully-outfitted with every bell and whistle someone could dream up.

It comes with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and a custom-tiled pool and spa. The mansion is also outfitted with top-notch security and a Crestron System that allows you to control every aspect of the home's electronics, lighting, and temperature from anywhere in the world on your smart phone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it cost Hudson almost $20 million to renovate the compound.

Lee Steiner at Sotheby's International Realty will be sharing the sale with auction house Platinum Luxury Auctions.

This is Villa Whydah in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the Virgin Islands.

It's located on the western tip of St. Thomas, and has incredible views of Botany Bay.

It's a part of a 397-acre gated community known as The Preserve.

San Francisco Couple Builds Custom Glass House That Has A Ridiculous View Of The City

$

Peter's House

Industrial designer Peter Russell-Clarke and Mechanical-engineer Jan Moolsintog commissioned architect Craig Steely with the difficult task of designing their dream home.

The couple wanted to build their house on a small 1,800-square-foot lot on a steep hill that Clarke had purchased in 2009, according to Dwell.

To take advantage of the limited amount of space, Steely decided to build up and create a tower type of home; and since the vacant site offered expansive views of San Francisco, he made the tower out of glass.

But then the main issue was, “how to build a glass house to capture the view and sunlight that still allows for a level of privacy," Craig Steely told Business Insider.

Peter's House

The solution was to build a system of moveable louvres made out of reclaimed cypress trees from San Francisco's Presidio park. The louvres, "are angled so the view can be seen from the inside but pedestrians outside cannot look in."

Some of the louvres are on fixed on the outside, and some are operable from the inside.

Peter's House

The home has a "wonderful view to the east but is immediately adjacent to a public garden and walkway." Thus, the louvres that are fixed on the outside of the glass home basically work like a fence.

Peter's House

But, in the bedrooms of the home, the louvers are inside the building, which allows the residents to adjust their expansive views of San Francisco.

Peter's House

Steely also implemented beautiful porthole windows throughout the home as a, "simple and practical solution for ventilating the large expanses of glass at all the walls."

Peter's House

The kitchen plays with the notions of indoor vs. outdoor. Steely explained that he used only white marble slab countertops and reclaimed Cypress to build the cabinets, and that he wanted to bring "rougher materials indoors and more refined materials outside."

Peter's House

Half of the indoor/outdoor kitchen was left unroofed to resolve practical issues with space. The couple can enjoy the sunshine in the summer months, and then stretch a fabric roof cover over it in the wet season.

Peter's House Rather than the typical foundations, the home is built on a cast-in-place concrete garage. The garage door uses an innovative scissor folding system, which is most often seen on airplane hanger doors.  The garage doors uses slats rather than the more common solid material.

"The slats emphasis the dynamic quality of the door as it opens and maintains a level of privacy in the garage when closed," Steely told Business Insider.

Peter's House

Here is a view of 'Peter's House' at night:
